01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Cooked gently in low-temperature oil upon each order, the fried cutlets at Tonpei are recognized by their fine, pale breading. Drained thoroughly so it sits light on the palate, the crisp exterior encases tender, juicy pork, releasing sweet melting fat and deep savory flavor with every bite. Whether you choose loin or fillet, it is best tasted first with plain salt rather than sauce to appreciate the meat's natural profile.

Another essential addition to the meal is the tonjiru, a pork and vegetable soup garnished with fragrant yuzu peel and mitsuba leaf. Prepared in a white miso base enriched with ample pork and vegetables, the soup carries a bright citrus lift that cuts smoothly through the richness of the deep-fried cutlet. Thoughtfully made accompaniments like wakame seaweed in vinegar, crisp pickles, and well-chilled bottled beer complete the spread.

Seating is limited to around 8 counter spots, with the owner handling cooking and service entirely solo. Preparing each cutlet to order takes a bit of time, but waiting quietly while the gentle sizzle fills the room is part of the charm. Payment is cash only, so plan ahead with enough time and cash on hand before your visit.
